Weight Allowance and Request a Reweigh

Weight Allowance

The maximum household goods (HHG) weight allowance depends on the member’s pay grade and dependency status. The maximum weight allowances are equal across all military branches and are prescribed by US Transportation Command and published in the Joint Travel Restrictions. If a member has dependents, all their possessions contribute to the HHG weight.

According to the JTR, Section 051401 paragraph A. 1., the weight of professional gear, required medical equipment, and gun safes, up to 500lbs, are not included in the HHG weight allowance. The member is allowed 2,000 pounds of professional gear, and a spouse is allowed 500 pounds. Professional gear includes professional tools, references, specialized clothing, uniforms, and issued gear.

Your HHGs will be weighted by the TSP after they have been loaded onto the truck that will transport them to their destination. The weight should be provided to you via email and will also be listed under the move in DPS.

Request for a Reweigh

If you received your weight and you do not believe it is accurate, you can ask for a reweigh by contacting your local transportation office or through your TSP representative. The reweigh is at no cost to you. The reweigh must happen prior to accepting delivery of goods. If you are available, you have the right to witness the reweigh or request to see the reweigh tickets for verification.

Ensure that the TSP is taking into account the weight of professional gear, medical equipment, and gun safes. According to the JTR, Section 051401 A. 1., the weight of professional gear (PBP&E), required medical equipment, and gun safes are not included in the HHG weight allowance. The maximum weight for member professional gear is 2,000lbs, spouse professional gear is 500lbs, and gun safe is 500lbs.

Additionally, the TSP must subtract 10% of the total weight to account for packing and shipping materials.
