Shipping Your Vehicle

Questions about shipping a vehicle? Will the government ship my vehicle?

Overview

You may be authorized to ship a Personally Owned Vehicle (POV) if:

  1. You have orders to, from, or between Outside Continental United States (OCONUS) permanent duty stations.

  2. If you meet specific a condition for a Continental US (CONUS) to CONUS move.

Attachment K3, Shipping Your POV, of the Defense Transportation Regulation – Part IV Personally Property is the basis for the information on this page and goes into greater detail.

OCONUS

PCSmyPOV is the site you will use to set up for POV shipment. Be sure to read over the information below before setting up your shipment.

  • Only one POV may be shipped at the government’s expense.

  • The POV must be less than 20 measurement tons. To calculate the MTONs of your POV, multiply the length times the width times the height (all in inches), divide by 1728 (this gives you the cubic feet of your POV), and then divide by 40 to obtain your POV MTONs (L x W x H/1728 = Cubic Feet/40 = MTONs).

  • Check destination restrictions.

  • Shipment of POV between US and US territories requires proof of ownership (e.g., vehicle title, lienholder letter, or a certificate of release from the title holder) and current vehicle registration.

  • What you may ship in your POV:

    • Vehicle tools with a value of less than $200.

    • Items normally stored in your car for emergencies. (i.e., tire chains, fire extinguishers, first aid kit, jumper cables, and warning signs/lights)

    • Spare tire.

    • Portable cribs, car seats, and strollers.

    • Luggage racks and supports.

    • Speaker and audio equipment in POV must be permanently affixed to POV.

    • Catalytic converters, catalyst components (pellets), oxygen sensors, or pipe segments used to replace converters in overseas areas.

Ensure your POV does not have a “Recall Notice.” If there are, schedule your car for a maintenance appointment ASAP to resolve the issue.

CONUS

The cost of shipping your vehicle is your responsibility. However, there is an exception:

In accordance with the JTR, par. 052901 and CGS-JFTR, par. 5416, a member who is physically unable to drive or has insufficient time to drive and report to the new PDS may be authorized to ship a POV by COMDT (CG-1332). One of the conditions must be met before requesting authorization from COMDT (CG-1332):

  1. The member is physically unable to drive as documented by a competent medical authority (i.e., a licensed medical practitioner); or

  2. There is insufficient time for the member to drive and report to the new PDS as ordered. An endorsement is required from the departing and reporting commands stating that the member is unable to take the applicable travel time to safely travel by POV because of operational reasons.

Note: A dependent’s inability to drive does not satisfy this criterion.

Talk with your local Yeoman and Command to understand if you meet the exception.

If you personally want to ship your vehicle, consider using a company like Four Corners Transportation or United Freight of America to ship your POV. You will be reimbursed for the mileage it could cost to drive your POV to your new location.
